A Different World : 30th Anniversary

A Different World : Aretha Franklin

This year we celebrate 30 years of  “A Different World”, so I thought today would be the perfect day to pull out my Kashmir Thompson, Different, notebook and put it to good use.

As I was writing I started singing the lyrics to the theme song and realized as a child, I would always sing the words but never thought about their meaning. This inspired me to go online and read the lyrics. To my surprise, I discovered they applied to my current situation.

Aretha Franklin (the version I like) was singing so passionately about that moment you decide to step out on your dreams. She was teaching us that not everyone will see or understand your vision,  but you should not let that discourage you. Take the time to acknowledge that everyone is different and continue to take your chances. Make sure focus and perfect your goals and soon, people will see exactly what you’re capable of achieving.

Congratulations to the cast of #ADifferentWorld for delivering such a positive, inspiring, and entertaining show. Read the lyrics yourself and let me know how you interpret them within your world and see if ours align.

Happy Sunday!

I know my parents love me,
Stand behind me come what may.
I know now that I’m ready,
Because I finally heard them say
It’s a different world than where you come from.

Here’s a chance to make it,
If we focus on our goals.
If you dish it, we can take it,
Just remember you’ve been told
It’s a different world,
It’s a different world,
Than where you come from
